KIM MEREDEW

Born in Kings Cross I am a time served bricklayer. After my apprenticeship I sat A levels in; Art, History of Art, Politics and English Literature, studying at evening classes. I then went on to read Philosophy and Literature (BA Hons) at Middlesex University, gaining a 2:1. Following this I trained with English Heritage as stone carver at their Vauxhall studio. Since then, and for over 20 years, I have worked restoring listed and period buildings and sculptures. I have also, over the last 10 years, made sculptures for a number of renowned artists and a number of works of my own. I now live in Woodbridge with my partner and children. I work across the whole of the south east. If you think that I could help you with a project, then please contact me. Thank you for taking time to look at my work. Kim.

I have a City and Guilds in Brickwork and Stone Masonry. I completed a three year traineeship as a stone carver with English Heritage.

Over the last 20 years I have worked on a large range of projects from reinstating Victorian bays, house renovation, stone steps and fireplaces, house building, community new builds, public buildings to restoration of churches and historic buildings (The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Sandhurst, Surrey, Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire, Butley Priory, Heveningham Hall and many more).

After my training I joined a building collective in London called CBD, Collective Building and Design and worked there for 4 years working on a wide range of projects, these included, community centres such as HCT, Hackney Community Transport, which was a combination of new build and restoration work. I also worked on numerous restoration of private houses and restorations in London.

I won the commission to design and make the figure of Christ In Ascension which sits over the main doorway of Southwark Cathedral.

I also won “Fakes” an international competition run by Raw Gallery by producing an exact copy of a Modigliani stone ‘Head’ from Tate Britain

I then became self-employed and worked for large stone companies and architects including London Stone, Paye Stone, Ashby Stone Masonary, Easton Masonary. The work included Sandhurst, Cambridge University, The Round Chaple, London E5 OLY.

Ten years ago I set up a stone studio in Suffolk where I now do building restoration, stone interiors- kitchens and bathrooms, stone floors and commissions . I work with architects and private clients. I recently completed a range of stonework for a private house in London. This included stone kitchen work tops and surrounds, fire surrounds & bathroom marble work.

In 2011 Alstair Sooke presented a BBC 4 series ‘Romancing The Stone; The Golden Years of British Sculpture’ in which I featured in 2 episodes.
