Feltwell Bell Tower, Conservation and repair. Summer 2018

The conservation of this Edwardian bell tower necessitated some structural stabilisation and the removal of elements which were contributing to the towers deterioration.

Rotten Timber due to water ingress. Cut back to good wood and pieced in with Douglas Fur.

Timber core of the finial rotted due to the iron stem of the weather vane rusting. This split the timber and copper overlay All of which had to be repaired along with the weather vane being treated.

Structural movement opened joints and snapped bricks. Repointed with hydraulic line mix and bricks cut out o

and replaced

Various iron and untreated timber inserts causing further deterioration. All had to be removed with brickwork replaced and repointed.

Example of cement pointing to stone work causing further damage. Stonework at the far end cleaned with water and brush.

Rotten timber below the leadwork had to be cut out, the timber posts replaced and the beadwork redressed.
